Fed: Vanstone denies govt soft on corporate cheats

CANBERRA, Aug 7 AAP - Family Services Minister Amanda Vanstone today denied suggestionsthe government was willing to get tough on welfare cheats but was soft on corporate cowboys.

"No, I don't think it's true," Senator Vanstone told the John Laws radio show.

"I don't think we're going soft on any of the corporate cowboys.

"Certainly we're not being any tougher in relation to welfare compliance than we need to be."

Labor financial services spokesman Stephen Conroy said the government was happy tosend welfare cheats to jail but not big business cheats.

His comments followed Prime Minister John Howard's warning to big business yesterdaythey must address community unease about corporate malpractices or face stronger regulation.

"He has put them on notice before," Senator Conroy told ABC radio.

"That is where John Howard won't act.

"He is happy to be tough on welfare cheats, he is happy to send welfare cheats to jailand increase the penalties.

"But when it comes to something like increasing the penalties on the business cheats,he isn't interested."
